Sheila K. Hoban-Pisciotta is a Stage 1 breast cancer survivor, advocate for early detection, woman of faith, and contributor to Lifted, By My Girls! Her story is rooted in prayer, family, resilience, and the importance of keeping up with routine screenings.
Sheila’s breast cancer journey began in November 2023, when a mammogram and sonogram led to further testing and a biopsy. Throughout her journey, Sheila was lifted by the love and support of her husband, her sisters, and the people who stood beside her.
Her diagnosis is also connected to another life-changing day. Sheila and her sister Bernie were in Lower Manhattan on September 11, 2001. Sheila is registered with the September 11th program, and her illness has been officially recognized as related to environmental exposure from 9/11.
In her chapter, “When Things Go Wrong, Just Pray,” Sheila shares the lesson her mother gave her—a simple message of faith that became a source of strength during the most frightening moments of her journey. Today, Sheila encourages women to keep their mammogram appointments, trust their instincts, advocate for themselves, and remember that they never have to face cancer alone.
